The Liberation of Auschwitz As Reported In The New York Times

ON JANUARY 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz camp complex. The majority of the prisoners, some 60,000, had been forced onto the Death March several weeks prior. The few thousand prisoners who remained behind were in severely poor health.

One of the first reports in the American press was in The New York Times, whose article consisted of just three sentences.

It is striking how briefly the event was reported. It is very telling about the coverage of the mass murder of the Jews by Nazi Germany.
